Chicago Combats Hunger in the LGBT Community

As the world continues to shift in the face of the pandemic, we’ve been focusing on what we can do to give back. During this year’s Pride month, we reached out to our friends at The Greater Chicago Food Depository to ask for guidance on how to better assist the queer community. Nutritional assistance is a vital part of creating a welcoming society to people of all sexual orientations. Did you know that over a quarter of all LGBT people in the United States have experienced food insecurity? Deeply-rooted problems such as underemployment due to discrimination can make it difficult to put food on the table in LGBT homes. The pandemic has only made this worse, as food distribution centers shut their doors in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Here in Chicago, that meant the hubs that supported the LGBT population suddenly had to do a lot more to support those who rely on them. Let’s take a look at some of the key local players in this effort!
